Chemicals in Emerging Applications

A multi-client study is proposed to determine the opportunities to supply chemicals
and base materials in the emerging market for Printed Electronics devices and components.

The study is likely to answer such questions as:

Which applications are important and have the most growth potential?
Which applications will require what chemicals and materials?
What is the demand for chemicals and base materials to 2015 and beyond ?
Who are the key players in the emerging value chain?
What opportunities exist to form partnerships and alliances?

The output would be a written report supported by detailed feedback sessions.

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) is the quango charged with encouraging industrial science and technology for economic benefit. It operates through 2 dozen or so Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs), each specialising in a modern industry or technology and helping companies with aspects of product and market development.

The Chemistry Innovation KTN serves chemical manufacturers (and others) – but most of the other KTNs (materials, electronics, environment, built environment, sensors and instruments, and even creative industries) depend upon high value chemistry to deliver their effects and products.

The KTNs talk to their constituencies through meetings and a massive website _CONNECT (https://ktn.innovateuk.org): all SORIS companies are encouraged to register on the site. Each of the KTNs has multiple Groups and Sub-Groups; SORIS searches these locations for business opportunities and connections for SORIS subscribers, but needs its members’ help to prioritize areas of greatest interest.

SORIS subscribers should email me to identify their “wish-list” market areas or to confirm the technologies which underpin their offering. Non-subscribers looking for new markets should also contact me.

Carbon Footprint Calculator

CIKTN and Manchester University have launched a carbon footprint calculator to help companies with product life cycle analysis and determination of greenhouse gas emissions.

A demonstrator is available on a memory stick from CIKTN or the full tool (based on Excel (2003 or later)) is at www.ccalc.org.uk

Strategic Projects to Access Research and Knowledge

The Materials KTN, in collaboration with the University of Glasgow, are pleased to announce the launch of SPARK Awards in Nanotechnology.

SPARK Award projects, funded by the University of Glasgow, have been launched in collaboration with the Materials KTN to support the UK Nanotechnology Community by giving UK based companies help to improve their industrial performance through the increased use of technology for product and process innovation.

Individual Awards of up to £5000 are available for UK based companies to fund problem solving, proof-of-concept technology demonstration and other development activities in the field of nanotechnology.

A recent Materials KTN presentation offered a method for identifying and recording “intellectual capital” (i.e. more than patents and trademarks and including intangible items).
A case study showed how composites technology plus telemetry from F1 motor racing had combined in a lucrative opportunity supplying lockable manhole covers for the London Olympics.

COSHH Risk Assessments

COSHH365 is a software and Internet wizard to help companies with COSHH risk assessments. It is not a substitute for the judgement of a health & safety manager, but seems to offer a considerable lifting of the administrative burdens of that post. It also prepares consistent and visually arresting documents. Notably it works with CHIP and CLP.

British Pavilion at Chemspec Europe

UKTI offers space for 13 companies on its pavilion at Chemspec Europe in Berlin on 9-10 June 2010. There is a possibility that 9 of those companies can qualify for exhibitor grants – which substantially reduce the cost of exhibiting.

Interested companies should contact Tricia Francis at UKTI North West office as soon as possible. A floor-plan of the exhibition suggests that the UKTI pavilion is very well located – easy to find and likely to catch a lot of “passing traffic” as visitors move between different halls.
