REACH and CLP Enforcement

As REACH and CLP implementations progress, more visible enforcement of the regulations is expected.

REACHReady and the Chemical Industries Association (CIA) would like to monitor more systematically how enforcement authorities are tackling REACH and CLP in the UK and have set up an online survey to collate feedback.

To begin, CIA and REACHReady would like to determine the proportion of companies subjected to enforcement activities and whether there are regional variations in enforcement. Hence, even a negative response is useful. It is possible to respond repeatedly to the survey, which is not restricted to CIA member companies.

The exercise is described at http://discuss.bis.gov.uk/focusonenforcement/ where it is also possible to leave comments. Be alert for other feedback routes (Trade Associations and regional clusters) while BIS is in “listening-mode”. The website also offers the chance to comment to BIS without your remarks being public.

DEFRA has announced the results of its review of environmental legislation, together with proposals for the removal or improvement of legislation. REACH 2013 Registration

Late pre-registration closes on 31 May 2012 for substances with a 2013 deadline. Downstream users may need to provide information to their suppliers before 31 May 2012 for suppliers to assess their use.

Not a new James Bond film, but the newly independent chemicals desk at UKTI. This service, which has advised, helped and found funds for would-be exporters for many years, has spun out of UKTI. About half of its time will be spent as a UKTI contractor (providing services as in the past). The remaining time is now available to assist individual companies in more detail.

ECHA study on safe use of chemicals

ECHA have published the findings of their study on communication on the safe use of chemicals.

Sustainable Chemistry 2011

UNIDO has published the proceedings of a Joint International Conference on Sustainable Chemistry in October 2011. It can be found at http://sustainablechemistry2011.com Although the goal of the conference was to “support sustainable chemistry strategies” it sounds as though the outputs demand further legislation against the chemical industry.
